Russia Leads England in 2018 World Cup Race
Russia won the right to stage soccer’s World Cup in 2018 this afternoon after only two rounds of voting, while Qatar comfortably defeated USA in the last of four rounds to secure the 2022 event, it has been revealed.
Both countries thereby overcame shortcomings outlined in evaluation reports issued by Fifa, soccer’s international governing body, last month, which will raise doubts over the value of such analysis.
Sepp Blatter, the president of Fifa, announced this afternoon that Russia had been chosen to host the World Cup for the first time after defeating the joint bids of Spain-Portugal and Netherlands-Belgium and England in a vote of the Fifa executive committee in Zurich.
Meanwhile, Qatar was selected ahead of USA, South Korea, Japan and Australia to stage the first World Cup to be held in the Middle East
The results of the voting for the 2018 competition show that Russia won nine of the 22 votes in the first round and, after the surprise elimination of England, increased its share to 13 in the second round, thereby achieving the necessary majority.
Russia’s bid includes construction of 13 stadiums and renovation of three more at a projected cost of $3.8 billion and an operating budget of $641 million for 2017-2018. Russia committed to make “major upgrades and capacity increases” at most airports serving the 13 proposed host cities, including Sochi, home of the 2014 Winter Olympics.
The full results of the voting were as follows:
2018 World Cup
Round 1: England 2 votes; Netherlands-Belgium 4 votes; Spain-Portugal 7 votes; Russia 9 votes (England eliminated)
